A Day of Discovery: Our Field Trip to the Arizona Science Center
Learning came to life when Arizona Virtual Academy (AZVA) students stepped through the doors of the Arizona Science Center for an unforgettable field trip filled with curiosity, creativity and hands-on exploration last week.
The trip was available for all AZVA students, as well as students from Insight Academy of Arizona (ISAZ), and more than 120 families attended. The Arizona Science Center offers experiences for learners of all ages, making it an ideal destination for each school’s diverse student body.
From the moment we arrived, all were engaged by the Center’s interactive exhibits designed to spark imagination and deepen understanding across science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Students explored everything from the intricacies of the human body to the fascination of flight, from the forces of nature to the science of sound waves and music. In addition to exploring exhibits, students participated in educational demonstrations and presentations led by Science Center educators.
Whether building structures, studying exhibits or listening to presentations, students were encouraged to ask questions, test ideas and think critically.
One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for students to learn through play. These hands-on experiences helped connect classroom learning to real-world applications in an exciting and memorable way. Jameson, a third grader at AZVA, enjoyed riding the SkyCycle, an exhibit suspended nearly 15 feet in the air that taught the principles of counterbalance and center of gravity.
Jeremiah’s mother, Katy, shared, “It’s great to have intentional socialization – we come to all the in-person events! With in-person school you have to be selected to chaperone but with AZVA, I get to join my kids on every trip.”
Each semester, AZVA plans a trip to one of the major city hubs of our state, encouraging students from all neighboring cities to attend, learn and have fun together. Experiences like this help students see learning as an ongoing journey that extends far beyond textbooks and tests.
“Field trips and events allow our virtual students an opportunity to learn outside the classroom and connect face to face with students in their school,” said AZVA and ISAZ Family Engagement Coordinator, Jennifer Wodrich. “It is a rewarding experience to see students who have met in their live classes or our virtual campus in the K12 Zone meet for the first time in person.”
January’s visit to the Arizona Science Center was more than just a day away from school; it provided meaningful learning opportunities and encouraged students to explore, connect and grow. By bridging online classroom instruction with real-world experiences, AZVA prepares students not only for academic success, but for a lifetime of curiosity and discovery.
