Arizona Virtual Academy Senior Graduates Early with Pilot License Already in Hand

When Alex walked across the stage at the Arizona Virtual Academy (AZVA) graduation ceremony last May, he celebrated more than earning his high school diploma. At just 17 years old, Alex graduated a year early and already holds a private pilot license and private glider pilot license. 

For Alex, aviation has been a lifelong passion inspired by his family’s military background. He grew up moving around the world as the son of an Air Force officer, living in seven states and overseas in both Germany and Saudi Arabia. 

That early exposure eventually turned into hands-on experience. During his time at AZVA, Alex dedicated time to training and building flight hours, and in January 2025, earned his private pilot license.  

Alex says the flexibility of online learning played a major role in helping him balance academics and aviation. 

“Online school has let us do so many cool things,” he said. “We’ve been able to put more things into our schedule. It’s definitely opened a lot of doors for us.” 

His family’s transition to online learning began in 2020. After experiencing virtual education during the pandemic, Alex found the format worked well for his learning style and made it easier to navigate the moves that came with military life. When his family relocated to Arizona, he smoothly transferred into AZVA and continued pursuing both his academic and aviation goals. 

In addition to flight training, Alex accelerated his progress with dual enrollment courses through Rio Salado College. With support from AZVA staff, including academic advisor Ms. Payne, he developed a plan that allowed him to graduate a full year ahead of schedule. 

“The hard work paid off,” Alex said. “Ms. Payne helped me get everything sorted out and helped me apply to Embry-Riddle. Having that support made a huge difference.” 

Now, Alex is enrolled at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, where he is pursuing an Aeronautical Science degree and is working toward advanced flight ratings. Because he already holds a private pilot license, he entered the program with a head start. 

His ultimate goal is to become an airline pilot, but first he hopes to earn his certified flight instructor rating and help train future aviators first. 

Throughout his online learning journey, he says the relationships he built with teachers, advisors, and classmates helped him stay motivated and focused on his goals; and, as he reflects on his high school experience, Alex hopes other students considering online learning will embrace the opportunities it can provide. 

“The most important thing is that the hard work pays off,” he said. “I graduated a year early because of online school. I’ve met so many cool people and teachers, and they all helped me get there. Once you take the leap and get into it, it can help you figure out what you want to do, get into the college you want, and really get your life on course.” 

With his AZVA diploma in hand, a private pilot license already earned, and Embry-Riddle on-track, Alex has already accomplished milestones many students won’t reach until years after high school. His journey shows how the right learning environment, strong support systems and a clear vision for the future can help students chart their own course and take off early.
