AZVA Students Celebrate Connection at Annual Prom

For many high school students, traditions like Prom give them the opportunity to celebrate milestones, build friendships and create unforgettable moments together.

At Arizona Virtual Academy (AZVA), students are proving that online learning does not mean missing out on those traditional high school experiences. Through school events and in-person activities, AZVA continues to foster a strong sense of community for students across Arizona.

One of the most anticipated events of the year is Prom, which AZVA and Insight Academy of Arizona (ISAZ) host together annually. This year marked the fifth annual celebration, bringing together students for an evening filled with music, dancing and community.

Held on May 28, the event welcomed more than 150 students and their guests for “A Night in Old Hollywood”. Mesa Athletic Grounds was transformed into a dazzling tribute to Hollywood’s golden age, complete with elegant décor, themed refreshments and era-inspired music.

Unlike many traditional schools, AZVA welcomes all high school students to Prom, including freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. The school also removes financial barriers by covering attendance costs for both students and their guests, ensuring every student has the opportunity to take part in this memorable experience.

One of the highlights of the night was the crowning of Prom royalty, with students from each school voting for peers who exemplify leadership, kindness and school spirit.

The king and queen from AZVA were seniors Adan and Mihelen Each of these students has demonstrated academic dedication, involvement in community service and a positive impact on fellow classmates.

For Mihelen, the recognition was a meaningful way to celebrate a successful high school journey and the relationships she built along the way. She said, “Graduating a year early is something I am really proud of. I’m so thankful for my teachers, the support they gave me, and the new friends I made along the way. I had such a fun school year, learned a lot and feel excited for my next chapter as I continue studying to be a pediatrician.”

Behind the scenes, the success of the event was driven by both staff and students. A student-led Prom committee worked closely with faculty to plan every detail, from decorations and playlists to activities and overall theme design. Their creativity and dedication helped make the event feel personal and meaningful for everyone in attendance.

Over the years, Prom has become more than just a dance for AZVA students. It has evolved into a cherished tradition that celebrates friendship, encourages involvement and gives students the opportunity to experience the social side of high school in an inclusive and welcoming environment.

Mihelen added, “Nothing lasts forever but at least we have these memories!”

Alongside its flexible and personalized approach to learning, AZVA continues to foster a vibrant school community where meaningful relationships and memorable shared experiences can flourish.

As the evening came to a close, attendees left with more than memories of a glamorous night. Events like Prom highlight the importance of belonging and community, creating opportunities to build relationships, celebrate milestones and share experiences that extend far beyond the dance floor.
