Building Healthy Study Habits: Small Changes That Make a Big Difference
Being a successful student doesn’t require being buried in textbooks or pulling all-nighters before big exams. More often it is the small, consistent habits students build throughout your school career that make the biggest difference. Developing personalized habits can help studying feel more manageable and make retaining knowledge feel like a piece of cake.
Create a Study Routine that Works for You
Arizona Virtual Academy (AZVA) blends rigorous academics with flexibility to meet you where you are. Whether that’s more support, fewer distractions, or a faster or slower pace, create the routine that fits your needs. By giving schoolwork a regular place in your day, getting started can be less overwhelming.
“Students do not need to have the perfect study routine from day one. The most effective habits are often the ones that are realistic enough to maintain,” advises Dr. Amy Hart, AZVA 6-12 Principal. “Finding a routine that fits your individual learning style can help turn studying into a natural part of the day rather than something you have to scramble to fit in.”
Hart suggests beginning by choosing a few times each week where you know you can focus. These don’t have to be long stretches of time. Even 30 to 60 minutes of intentional study time can be productive and much less daunting.
Treat your study time like an appointment. Add it to your calendar or planner, set a reminder, and give yourself a clear goal. For example, instead of writing “study biology,” try “review Chapter 8 notes and complete 10 practice questions.” Being specific can make the session feel more rewarding.
There is no one-size-fits-all practice when it comes to learning. Test out different techniques to find what works best for you and remember that your AZVA teacher is just a message away.
Use Your Resources
As an AZVA student, you are surrounded by a strong support system. Students also have a variety of resources to help them stay engaged, connected and on track.
From connecting with teachers in your live classes, or reviewing recorded sessions at a later date, to one-on-one support with K12 Tutoring, AZVA has an abundance of resources to help you navigate your education.
Taking advantage of support when needed can help you become more confident and independent in your learning.
Make Your Study Space Work for You
Whether you’re learning at the kitchen table, or in the yard under your favorite tree, or even on a family road trip, making small adjustments to your environment can help your study session feel even more productive. Setting up a dedicated desk, keeping the materials you need within reach and putting your phone aside when you need uninterrupted focus time are great ways to settle into your schoolwork. Over time, regularly studying with the same habits can create a positive connection between your space and learning.
Sometimes a change in scenery can also help you see a challenging subject with a new mindset. A library, café, or other quiet public space can provide a fresh atmosphere that helps you focus and approach a lesson with renewed energy.
Find a Study Buddy or Group
Another benefit of being a student at AZVA is that your study buddy doesn’t have to live nearby. By scheduling video study sessions, you can work toward your goals together – no matter where you live.
Your peers can be an invaluable resource to rely on. Studying with a friend can not only help keep you accountable, but can also help you get a better understanding. Explaining concepts out loud can help you test and strengthen your own understanding, and asking questions can help you find a new perspective when you’re stuck on a difficult topic.
Hart also encourages families to connect through AZVA “Strider Squads”. Strider Squads are small, local groups of AZVA students who meet once a month to hang out, learn, and grow together. Each squad is led by a trained parent volunteer.
Take Care of and Reward Yourself
Healthy study habits should also include taking care of yourself. Make time for resting, eating, moving around, and hobbies. Reward yourself after reaching a goal whether that means a treat, an episode of a show, or simply recognizing your accomplishments.
“The goal is not to have the perfect study habits overnight,” says Dr. Hart. “Start with one small change and build a strong foundation from there. Over time, see yourself feeling more prepared, focused, and confident.”
